This summer, we’re studying the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), the greatest sermon ever preached. In these chapters, Jesus teaches what it looks like to live as a citizen of His kingdom—distinct from the world and transformed by His grace. As we walk through His words together, our prayer is that God will shape us into people who stand out for Christ and make an impact for His kingdom.
Lesson 1—A Christian Counter-Culture (Matthew 5:1-12)
This opening sermon in our study of the Sermon on the Mount introduces Jesus’ vision for life in His kingdom. Jesus teaches that His followers should stand out from the world, not because of outward appearances, but because of hearts that have been changed by God. Through the Beatitudes, He describes the kind of character that marks a true disciple: humility, repentance, righteousness, mercy, purity, peacemaking, and faithfulness in the face of opposition. Before Jesus tells us what to do, He shows us what we are to be as citizens of His kingdom.
Lesson 2—Standing Out as Kingdom Citizens (Matthew 5:13-20)
Jesus our King has called His children to stand out. Like salt, we are to bring a positive influence to the world around us and preserve what is good. We must remain useful and effective for His purposes. Like light, we are to shine the hope of Christ and the truth of His Gospel into a world darkened by sin. As we faithfully live out and proclaim the Word of God, we can make a lasting impact for the kingdom of God. This week’s lesson challenges us to stand as kingdom citizens.
